    The annual Standard Chartered Recognition Awards celebrate the organisation’s people who live and breathe the spirit of the bank’s fundamental values daily to achieve greatness for the bank, its clients and communities within and around the business. The bank’s core values encompass: Doing the right thing, Better together and Never settle. The Awards spotlight individuals and teams who exemplify one or more of these. The Standard Chartered Recognition Awards is regarded as the highest level of recognition attainable within the organisation.
     
    Since the inception of the Awards, the final panel interview and awards ceremony has typically been held on location in various markets. However, due to the pandemic and various travel/movement restrictions, the organising committee faced the challenge of finding a way to conduct this year’s awards event virtually yet replicating the same levels of excitement while capturing the intended overall experience for the Awards, albeit virtually. In addition, the Awards format required specific provisions to be made around the judging process, including time for engagement between the judging panel and the participating teams.
     
    The eventual awards ceremony and programme were to be broadcast live across 15 time zones to the bank’s employees and stakeholders. Key considerations had to be made around the planning and organising of such a large-scale virtual event on all fronts – from creative visuals to programme flow, logistics and technical capacity – all aimed at creating a conducive, engaging and memorable virtual experience for participants and audiences alike, while maintaining an emphasis on core aspects of recognition and appreciation aligned to the objectives of the Awards.

    As the Awards have traditionally been held physically at one of the bank’s key markets, the organising committee now had to consider how to bring the event to life in a virtual setting in the best way possible, particularly when participants and audiences were going to be engaging from remote locations. 

    The key to this was creating an immersive and captivating experience through creative visual treatments and virtual environment designs that were strategically aligned to the objectives and overall spirit of the awards. From a programme flow and user journey standpoint, a series of digital avenues were carefully crafted and implemented, contributing to the overall experience’s seamlessness. 

    The detailed conceptualisation and production of a fully immersive 3D virtual village. As one of the highlights of the overall Awards programme, the 3D virtual village allowed users to navigate through and discover the full extent and array of the diverse award submissions ahead of the live event. This was especially remarkable considering the tight timeframe of 4 weeks in which the team had gone from conceptualisation to delivery of a fully functional 3D environment.
     
    The concept of the 3D virtual village enhances the audience’s experience by fitting its resonance and alignment with the bank’s focus on inclusivity – which was to create a place where employees could come together in a supportive and conducive environment that cultivated innovation and also encouraged the exchange of ideas.

    The development and curation of the 3D virtual village constituted only part of the entire process. It is then integrated and hosted within the bank’s internal platform. Special back-end provisions had to be made to allow nominees to then present in-depth information regarding their submissions within this virtual environment. These came in video uploads, digital presentations, and related visual assets they had compiled to contribute to the judges. The team’s job is to deliver them and create a unique experience.

    The 3D virtual village also allowed interactivity and user experience for the employees and judges to review individual submissions. This allowed the judges to study each presentation closely as part of the selection process, from which the eventual winners were subsequently determined.
    The event garnered almost 5,000 live attendees on the day, with an additional 3500 tuning into the on-demand replay. The 3D virtual village was a huge success, receiving a constant influx of visitors eager to traverse the immersive virtual environment.
     
    The reception to the Awards programme and virtual environment was overwhelmingly positive. 97% of respondents polled said they would definitely attend the next Awards ceremony if it were conducted in the same manner.
     
    Participants and audiences alike shared their joy and appreciation regarding the organisation and execution of the event, both from a user experience perspective and also from the content presented. Common sentiments revolved around how the virtual experience that was created had helped bring the entire organisation together, despite being spread across time zones and geographies and particularly in a time when these connections were most needed, given the prolonged remote working arrangements brought about by the pandemic.
     
    A unique benefit of the virtual experience was that it genuinely expanded the reach of the Awards across the bank’s global offices. This inaugural virtual experience contributed exceptionally positively to the bank and its employees, ultimately exceeding all expectations set out at the start of the project.
